Craig y Ffynnon |
Not a CNS event, but one that many of our members are already involved with that others may like to be aware of
The South Wales Geologists Association / British Cave Research Assocation event the 5th and 6th march.
On the 5th there will be a symposium of talks with an optional visit to the museum to see some of the cave related collections and exhibits in Geology, Archaeology and Zoology. The event starts at 9:00 and continues until 17:00 with the museum trip until 19:00 The symposium incudes a range of talks on cave science and there will also be a selection of poster presentations. The programme has been themed towards the geology and Archaeology of Welsh Caves, but some covering international sites as well.
Please note we will be in the ground floor 1st year lab for coffee and you have the option of packed lunch or one of the usual local places. No Prior registration is needed for this event (however BCRA/SWGA members will be given priority for the tour), but there will be a small charge of £3.00 for members £6.00 for non- BCRA/SWGA members to cover some unavoidable costs. There will be some stands with information and books for free/sale.

The Sunday will be a field trip to the Caves and Karst of the Swansea Valley where we will visit the Dan-yr-Ogof Show caves led by Dr Keith Ball and the surface features and caves of Ogof Ffynnon Ddu led by Dr Noel Christopher. For these you will need helmets and lights as the lights will not be on, even in the show cave. The Show cave will be easily accessible by all, and he OFD II system will also be accessible to most as we plan only to visit a very easy part of the cave with large passages and chambers. There will be a trip deeper into the system offered to cavers only, and depending on time. Boots or wellies are necessary, and for the afternoon trip old clothes and a proper caving helmet and lamp is mandatory therefore it is imperative that people pre-book with Andy Kendall a minimum of 10 days before the event to ensure equipment is booked.
If you prefer not to visit the OFD system there will be a surface walk before the 1 hour underground trip. It will also be possible to just do the morning or afternoon. Packed lunches are needed and will be able to be eaten at the cavers cottage if the weather is bad

Andy
