Our next field trip takes place on Saturday 26th February with a start time of 10am. We shall be walking around 7 to 8 kms from the car park at Merthyr Mawr on the edge of the dunes. The event is led by Steve Howe of the National Museum of Wales and we shall be looking at the geology of the area along with any wildlife that happens to be about.
If you do not know the area this is a great chance to find out more. Merthyr Mawr warren is 323 hectares of dune system, designated an SSSI and at 200 feet high, the second highest in Europe. We last visited the area in the summer in 2009 where we saw a wide range of invertebrates and unusual plants such as Birthwort and the Green-flowered Helleborine. Alongside the car park is Candleston castle, dating from the late 14th century.
Facilities are limited at the car park - the toilets may or may not be open so a visit elsewhere before you arrive might be helpful. Bring a packed lunch, warm clothing and suitable footware. No need to book - just turn up.
